Hilda Whitegoat is a full blooded Native American Indian. She was born into the Navajo Nation in 1967. Hilda learned the Navajo etched pottery method from her sister Susie Charlie.
This vase is done in the Navajo Etched method. Lovely earthy colours were used in the decoration, white, blue, blue grey, turquoise, black.
Navajo potters combine traditional techniques with contemporary styling. All carved and etched pottery pieces are hand carved and hand painted. The carving is very precise and time consuming. The paint “slips” are natural pigments from the earth.
